John, a haunted widower who has just seen the ghost of his deceased wife, seeks counsel in the company of a therapist. Ian, the therapist, is forced to deal ever closely with John's ghost story as his relationship with his girlfriend Neasa begins to mirror that of John and his wife's, concluding in the play's shocking and terrifying denouement. With his genuinely relatable characters and characteristic spook, McPherson gives us the voyeuristic pleasure of peering into deeply private moments in these characters' lives, while at the same time bringing us to an acute understanding of ourselves.
"Quiet, haunting, and absolutely glorious…Shining City is as close to perfection as contemporary playwriting gets." --Ben Brantley, The New York Times
