The Celestial Lyre: Muses + Modes + Music of the Spheres in Renaissance Italy

  • Whitney Humanities Center 53 Wall Street New Haven, CT, 06511 United States (map)
In Renaissance philosophy, the seven planets, the nine muses, and the eight musical modes were spiritually connected, their affinities expressed as the strings of a great celestial lyre.
The Yale Collegium Musicum explores these magical relationships in a program of songs, dances, and other instrumental works, expressed by voices and period instruments.
Works by Gaffurius, Josquin, Galilei, Cavalieri, Caccini, and others
