George is a linguist trying to preserve and document dying languages from all over the world. Ironically, he has trouble communicating with his wife, Mary. Verbally stifled with her husband, Mary turns to the written word to channel her disappointment in their marriage. The relationship finds its opposite in Resten and Alta, a bickering yet endearing old couple who happen to be the last native speakers of the fictitious language Elloway. As they arrive in the lab, two worlds collide. Their language may be dying, but their relationship is very much alive. In the meantime, George's lab assistant, Emma, sets out to articulate her sentiments for him. At once universal and stunningly modern, The Language Archive raises questions about the role of language across genders, cultures, and time itself.
