artistic utilitarianism: a mode of thought encompassing anything that contributes to the notion of a simultaneously conscious, creative, and altruistic existence; pursuing each aspect of life with the priority of commitment to the causes one cares about and creating opportunities for others to do the same through whatever they consider their “art”; being the change one wishes to see in the world while remaining aware of ways to include others in one’s goal …

In other words, if music (and art as a whole) is so potent, as we all know it is, let’s harness the invigoration it evokes!

This charitable event is a combined conference and set of performances—attendees need only stay for the portion of the twelve hours that interests them. For the conference portion of the day, the programming will consist of 1) workshops relating to the theme of the conference (artistic utilitarianism) or avenues/philosophical approaches/career actualizations of becoming an agent in the modern world in a way that is simultaneously artistic and political and 2) improvised music sessions with instruments available for anyone who wants to tap into expression via sound. All can participate in either, and the improvisation sessions will, in many cases, be led by musicians performing later in the evening.

What charitable effort is being benefited? The Ana Grace Project. Founded to focus on child care and mental health in celebration of Connecticut saxophonist Jimmy Greene’s daughter, lost in the 2012 Newtown shooting, the Ana Grace Project is the perfect cause for an artist and for humanity as a whole.

If you would like to perform or present a workshop, you are wanted, so please contact Also, any art or political/social writing is needed for two zines that will be released at the event. And the conference is a cassette release party. And there will be an open mic for poetry reading too. And all are welcome.

Every cent raised by the event will be donated to charity for family planning in developing countries. Any help in raising funds to make this event happen would be greatly
